Ayurveda views the digestive system as the master in the human body; most diseases originate and culminate in our digestive system. For over five thousand years, Ayurveda's area of expertise has been the digestive system.
When our digestive system doesn't function optimally, it triggers a chain reaction that can affect other tissues of the body in the long term and may lead to chronic diseases and complications.
A significant factor from the Ayurvedic perspective regarding the digestive system is physical and mental stress. According to Ayurveda, the digestive system cannot work optimally if there is chronic stress in the body. However, stress and the digestive system are like the chicken and the egg—who influences whom? When the digestive system doesn't work as it should, it generates physical stress. Fortunately, Ayurveda provides a clear solution to break this cycle of suffering, which culminates in stress and digestive system disturbances.
Issues such as chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue and bloating after eating, trapped gas, fungal infections, heartburn, and reflux, for which Western medicine has yet to find a long-term solution, receive broad and effective solutions in Ayurveda.
-
The aim of treatment in Ayurveda, specifically in Kaya Chikitsa (internal medicine system), for digestive issues is to heal the digestive problem experienced by the patient, in order to minimize unnecessary suffering and prevent chronic diseases that arise as a chain reaction to a digestive system not functioning optimally.
