Yoga Nidra

Rest Into The Depth Of Your Mind.

A few years ago in India I went to a random yoga Class call yoga nidra. I didn't even know what 'Nidra' meant so I prepared myself to explore another posture (asanas) yoga style. In the class, I was surprised to discover that I'm actually supposed to lay down on the floor in Shavasana for the whole time. My lazy self immediately fell in love with this practice!

After the session, my body was so relaxed and yet energized, my mind slowed down and I could think and speak more clearly. My mind and my body were extremely grateful for that experience, as well as that lazy part of me. I realized there is so much more for me to explore in the ancient teachings of Yoga Nidra, and so I did. I discovered and am still discovering an endless wisdom of an ancient practice that helps us to gently but effectively clear layers of stress and emotional blockages in the body and mind.

Yoga Nidra was born from the powerful practices of tantra, mainly Nyasa. The main feature of Nyasa is the systematic rotation of consciousness in the body by chanting specific mantras where each part of the body has its own mantra. Nyasa tantra includes hundreds of different mantras.

These sacred teachings were only known amongst yogis and yoginis who were devoted to the ashram life. They were the only people who could study this Nyasa tantra and learn the specific mantras.

Swami Satyananda Sraswati, a direct student of Swami Shivananda, then gradually created the practice of Yoga nidra as a way to share the experience of Nyasa tantra with those who weren't living the ashram life.
