Ayurvedic Detox

Sat Karma cleans, Panchakarma, Agni cleans, Vata/Pitta/Kapha cleans; does it all sound familiar? How will we know that we need detoxification

If you experience one or more of the following symptoms, it is likely that detoxification is right for you

fatigue, heaviness, and energy decline, bloating and heaviness after meals, sour or metallic taste in the mouth, increased mucus production, constipation or alternatively loose stools, inconsistent bowel movements, oily or excessively dry skin, frequent relatively mild illnesses, prone to catching diseases easily, blurred vision, foggy thinking, uncharacteristic clumsiness, loss of appetite.

If the season is late autumn or late spring

these seasons are suitable for everyone to undergo annual detoxification. Ayurveda believes that detoxification is an integral part of the yearly cycle to keep us healthy and strong throughout the year.

Types of cleanses

  • Seasonal detoxifications according to Ayurveda are a vital way to maintain proper functioning of all body systems, allowing the body a break to heal itself. Charaka and Sushruta Samhitas, ancient Ayurvedic texts writers, believed that seasonal detoxifications are not a privilege but a health necessity, especially in the world we live in today.

  • Vata - Air and Space (Gut Area)

The gut not only looks like a brain, but it actually functions like one. There are an equal number of neurotransmitters in the small intestine as in the spinal cord. Ninety-five percent of serotonin in the body is produced in the nerve cells of the intestines. Research over the past decade has found a direct connection between gut flora imbalance and attention and concentration problems. Ayurveda already knew 5000 years ago that the nabhi, the area around the navel considered the second brain, is the largest emotional center in the body. Ayurveda also knew that the wata area - the intestine, when out of balance, is associated with restlessness, lack of concentration, along with constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome is associated with anger. The intestine is the only organ, besides the brain of course, connected to the autonomic nervous system.

And why is this so important?

Ayurveda sees a direct connection between consciousness and the soul residing in the body and the physical body.

It is impossible to separate all the elements of life - emotion (senses), body, consciousness, and soul. They are connected and operate symbiotically.

And the health of the intestines and the digestive system necessarily shapes the way we navigate the world, form connections, organize our daily routine, and make decisions.

This is why intestinal cleansing is so crucial for overall health, not only for the digestive system but also for the nervous system and consciousness.

  • Pitta - The Fire and Water Elements, the pitta region includes the liver, gallbladder, small intestine, pancreas, kidneys, blood system, and spleen, also considered the transformation area in the body.

    What does the liver do?

At the end of the digestion process, nutrients, \all the vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats, fatty acids, and more, are absorbed by the walls of the intestines, and all waste exits through the stool. Where are all these nutrients absorbed next? They are absorbed into the portal vein that carries them to the liver! The liver processes all these nutrients and sends them to the rest of the body's tissues, the immune system, the circulatory system, fat tissue, muscles, bones, nervous system, and brain, as well as the reproductive tissues—meaning that a healthy liver is the health of each of the body's tissues. We cannot expect all systems to function smoothly if the liver struggles to function. Unfortunately, in today's world, processed food, stress, non-local and non-fresh nutrition, pollution, refined sugar, and more, all accumulate in the liver. Today, one of the most common problems is problems originating from toxins accumulated in the liver. I see this in about four out of five patients who come for treatment; many times the source of the problem is the liver.

Fortunately, there is a solution to this. The liver itself aspires to cleanse itself all the time, so during a liver cleanse, we allow and assist the liver in detoxifying from the toxins and fats accumulated over the years.

This cleanse is designed to remove all imbalances and accumulations of water-soluble or fat-soluble toxins in these areas of the body through nutrition, cleansing processes, and herbal remedies.

  • Kapha - Water and Earth

Kapha primarily governs the immune system and the flow of prana in the body - breathing, oxygen.

When kapha is in balance, it grounds, balances, and strengthens. It is responsible for stability, calmness, serenity, sweetness, lubrication of joints, and immunity against diseases.

But what happens when kapha goes out of balance? You may feel tiredness and heaviness, congestion, increased phlegm, weight gain, frequent illness, and your breathing becomes sluggish and insufficient.

Kapha cleansing typically occurs in spring, after we have accumulated so much water and earth during the winter, meaning cold and moisture.

Personally, it's my favorite cleanse because the results can be felt immediately afterward. The body becomes light, a spirit of vitality and joy takes over tiredness and laziness, breathing becomes clear and soothing, and you can start afresh.

A kapha cleanse usually takes between three days to a week and may include cleansing nutrition, phlegm-clearing processes like kongjala, and neti and nasya - don't worry, I'll explain everything when we meet. Together with herbal remedies as needed.

Signs that this cleanse is suitable for you

    Feeling general heaviness and tiredness

Difficulty waking up in the morning

    Persistent phlegm

    Weight gain

    High cholesterol or triglycerides

    Irritating cough with phlegm

    Frequent allergies or sinus infections

  • In Ayurvedic terms, "Roga" signifies illness or disease, while "Jwara" represents Fever and inflammation.

During illness, the immune system is already engaged in addressing the disease, and our role is to avoid interference. The entire body weakens during illness as all energy is directed towards coping with the ailment.

So, how does most of the world cope when illness strikes? Many resort to pain relievers or fever reducers, continue to eat and work as usual, and perhaps take a day or two off work for those who are more delicate with themselves. All of these habits only obstruct the body's ability to cleanse the illness. Indeed, we may temporarily plaster over the sick feeling, but the inflammation that arises may become chronic if the body is not given the time and energy to deal with the illness properly, leading to long-term complications.

Ayurveda offers a clear and decisive protocol regarding fever and illness. Each individual experiences illness differently, and it originates from a different source within a unique body structure. Therefore, it is crucial to tailor the "Jwara" protocol precisely to the body structure and type of illness you are experiencing.

The goal of "Jwara" cleansing is to enable the body to cleanse the illness efficiently and quickly, preventing inflammation from becoming chronic and persistent and avoiding future complications.

Signs that this cleansing is suitable for you

Signs of illness and fever are present.
